Selections from the Middle East, the Middle of the East & Just East of the Middle.

Taking inspiration from the ethno-cosmic music of the 80s and early 90s, Muslimgauze, Fourth-world Japan, Crammed’s ‘Made to Measure’ series, or going back further, other samplers of Middle Eastern and North African sonic traditions including library recordings.

I was attracted to the laconic spaciousness and heaviness of some of this music – the rippling dubbed saz loops, desert ambient interludes, complex hand-drum patterns and the samples of arabesque voices and strings - sounds that don’t just feel like exotic add-ons to standardized motifs, but are instead heading off confidently in their own direction, part of their own aesthetic and sonic organization. A psychedelic mind-meld of East and West.
